( This thread takes place before Bearshadow's deputyship, and after Echofrost's leadership )
Late evening light spilled though the crevice that spanned the front of camp. The golden rays captured dust motes, which twirled lazily within their beams, and pooled on the stone floor below. The sunlight glittered off the crystalline pool, a luminous display that was, somewhat ironically, painful to look at. Outside of the cave, clouds drifted across the warming sky, their colors softened with sunset hues.
The sight brought with it a feeling of serenity, and happiness bloomed within Echostar's chest. She was, for a number of reasons, in a cheerful mood this evening. There was still the lingering feeling of peace and pride that had accompanied her nine lives ceremony. It was the first time the molly had truly seen her warrior ancestors, and such a sight left a residual feeling of joy and humbleness. Newleaf always brought with it a sense of relief. The previous leaf-bare had been hard and long, as it always was. It still pained Echostar to think of it; it hadn't been long since Larkstar had passed to a destructive spread of greencough. She respected her leader greatly, and the thought of replacing her so quickly after such a great loss was difficult to entertain. However, Echostar was determined to guide and care for the clan that took her in so generously. She wasn't far into her leadership, but Echostar was confident in her abilities. Newleaf had come, melting the biting frosts of winter and coaxing colorful flowers from the ground. Birdsong returned to the trees, which were now spotted with the lime-green hints of new growth. And now, she had a gift of her own to give the clan.
Echofrost cast one more glance at the luminous sky outside the cave before striding over to the wall. She climbed nimbly onto a barely-visible ledge, weaving up the trail of stone to the Highledge. The sun cast her albaster pelt aglow, lightening frosty lavender eyes to a near icy-white. Turning from the view, Echostar let her gaze fall on the cave below.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey join here beneath the Highledge for a clan meeting!"

Appearing from a lonely shadow at the edges of the camp, Bearshadow stalked out into the clearing, rolling his powerful shoulders with each step. He kept his eyes on Echostar, unable to prevent the curiosity from crossing his face. He was fairly certain that she would be naming her first deputy, a task she had delayed for longer than he and some of the other senior warriors were more than a little uncomfortable with. He had done his best to help the young leader by gathering patrols, half hoping that his efforts would not go unnoticed. He knew that there were other viable choices, and he would grudgingly respect the choice if she made it, but he knew that he was the only one truly ready to help guide her in the early stages of her leadership. If he could steer that leadership into helping him give IvyClan what they deserved, then all the better. Sitting near the back of the gathering cats, he didn't dare take his eyes off his leader, unable to stop himself from watching for weaknesses.

As the clan gathered, Echostar pushed away the last remaining shreds of doubt. It was foolish to dwell on Larkstar's loss, and in turn disregard the immediate need for a new deputy. She wouldn't endanger her clan in that way any longer. Roseclan had many strong, loyal warriors capable of supporting the clan. And Starclan knew the clan needed the support, after such a harsh Leaf-bare.
Echostar had dwelled for many long nights on this decision. She would be choosing the clanmate responsible for all patrols, and for being her partner in command. She was choosing the probable future leader of this clan; it was not a decision the molly took lightly.
"As you all are aware, Roseclan is in need of a deputy." Straight to the point. "It was a mistake on my own part to wait this long, but no longer."
Her confidence rose as she spoke. Despite her previous reservations, Echostar knew she had made the correct choice. Bearshadow was a brave and loyal warrior, who had served the clan selflessly even since the death of his mother (which Echostar had not witnessed, though she arrived at the clan shortly after). He would guide the clan well, and eventually take her place as a strong leader.
"I say these words before Starclan, so that the spirits of our warrior ancestors may hear and approve of my choice. The new deputy of Roseclan is Bearshadow."

Cherrypaw cheered for her mentor. She had only become an apprentice recently and was happy that she had an important mentor. (Cherrypaw is old enough, right?)

(Just a thought but it might be an idea to post how long ago it was in moons so we're all on the same page. This thread would take place less than a moon ago so you're good @asiandumbledore )
(I'm guessing this is after the skirmish as that thread was made before Bearshadow officially became deputy and Blossom made a comment about Echostar choosing a first deputy in that thread. If I'm mistaken let me know and I'll fix my post)
At Echostar’s call Chervilpaw stumbled out from Dawnspirals den. Three steps and three agonizing pains shooting up her leg and she knew it was no good. A final hiss of pain escaped her and she drew her injured paw up to her belly. Soon she was out in the airiness of the clearing punctuated by the first floral scents of spring. The smooth dirt was cool and soothing against her three paws and the gentle breeze seemed to egg her onwards with gentle tugs at her pelt. Speaking of her pelt it should have been freshly groomed and gleaming for her first ceremony amongst those who caught their own prey, instead it was a ragged mess of half formed scars. She took her spot on the very edge of the clearing; partly because she was being punished and partly because it hurt so much to move.
Bearshadow. No surprise there.
From the way he’d been ordering patrols out and the way he fearlessly leapt to her aid in the skirmish, he was a great warrior, full of clan blood. He would see the clan strong. Still Chervilpaw couldn’t help but search for his grizzled pelt. If only she was far enough forwards to see the look on his face.

( I'm not entirely sure. Due to the skirmish thread, and the abrupt change of ranks during it, the timeline has been somewhat mixed up. I had intended the ceremony to take place after the border fight, but Bearshadow fought that battle as a deputy. I think I'm going to stick to this being after the battle. )
Flutterpaw's gaze was drawn to Echostar's silver-and-white form, which was climbing the pathway to the Highledge. Eyes widened in interest, the apprentice hopped to her paws. She was making her way to the center of camp even before Echostar's call rang out, a summons.
Cats began to gather, and Flutterpaw scanned the crowd. What's going on? Do any of them know?
Her question was quickly answered. A new deputy! Who could it be? Would it be her mentor? She was distracted from her wild thoughts when she saw her sister struggle from the medicine cat's den on the side of the cave.
"Chervilpaw!" She scampered over, brow creased in worry. "Are you okay?" Stupid question. She hovered uncertainly by her side, then settled next to her. She felt regret prickle under her pelt as she met Chervilpaw's gaze. She felt awful that she hadn't been there for Chervilpaw. The previous night, she had begged to sleep in the medicine den with her, to no avail. Though, her main regret lay in the fact that she hadn't fought alongside her sister.
I wish I could have done something...

Bearshadow sat there staring, wide eyed for a long moment, deaf to the noises around him. He was fairly certain his heart would explode from his chest as he processed it. Deputy. He had actually been made deputy. For all his bluster he had rather expected the young she-cat to pick someone else as her deputy. He got to his paws, though the stiffness of his move made the motion feel rather disjointed. "Thank you, Echostar, for this honor," He declared, a little surprised at the unwavering confidence and pride in his own voice, "I will do everything I can to protect this Clan, as I always have, and as we all do. I hope that together we can lead RoseClan to brighter days." He felt his chest fur puff out as he moved his hungry eyes from Echostar to the cats around, making eye contact with each of them. yes. This was the respect he deserved. The power he deserved. Deep in his chest, his well suppressed thirst for power began to stir.

(blossom , did you mean for him to say Roseclan? Just checking in case you wanted us to call him out on it.)
Of course, Flutterpaw was not content to sit back and let her sit alone on the outskirts. She nodded quietly and dragged her eyes away from her sister’s eager face; being caught talking in a ceremony was the last thing she needed right now. She shifter her weight so she was turned more squarely towards Echostar – and more squarely away from her sister – sending another twinge of nauseating pain running through her. If Bearshadow’s wounds were bothering him he made no show of it, although he did make his speech from the midst of the crowd which had to be easier than standing by Echostar on the rockledge as she and her siblings had done. Something about his confidence sent the tension rolling away from Chervilpaw. They were safe. They would keep moving. Everything was going to be okay.

Echostar felt a flood of satisfaction. Yes, this had been the right choice. Roseclan needed a deputy, and Bearshadow was a strong and dedicated cat.
She descended the rocky slope, padding up to meet her new deputy. "Thank you for your devotion to this clan." She said, more quietly. "I look forward to guiding it by your side."
She knew Bearshadow was her elder; it felt almost unjust for her to be a rank above him. Yet, Echostar knew that they could guide the clan together well. While she would do her best, she also hoped the support of an experienced warrior would better her leadership skills.
